CINCINNATI, Ohio - An FDA advisory panel voted unanimously to ban the popular over-the-counter painkiller Celebrex, which is used to treat arthritis and other forms of arthritis, from selling in the United States. In an announcement announced Thursday, the FDA announced that it had received complaints from patients who are taking the drug and has ordered that it be removed from the market.
The panel, a bipartisan group of doctors, pharmacists and others working with the Food and Drug Administration, voted 18-4 to recommend that the drug be withdrawn from the market, with a recommendation that the FDA review of the drug’s safety will be limited to two years.
“As the FDA has noted, celecoxib is a medication that has been withdrawn from the market,” said Dr. Elizabeth M. Weitz, Ph. D., a professor of pharmacology and medical sciences at Yale University.
The FDA had asked the panel to advise that the drug be withdrawn from the market before the Food and Drug Administration has made any final decision. FDA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Merck, Pfizer, and its subsidiaries, Merck and Eli Lilly, have been asked to submit their comments by the FDA on Thursday.
Celebrex is known by its generic name, celecoxib. Its generic version is a more similar version of the drug to Celebrex. Celebrex is approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and it is prescribed to relieve symptoms of arthritis, including pain, swelling and stiffness, as well as menstrual pain, headaches, menstrual cramps and menstrual pain.
Celebrex is available in three doses, 200mg, 400mg and 800mg, each with an FDA-approved label. Those who have a prescription will need to take a dose of 200mg of celecoxib, plus an option of 800mg of Celebrex. The dose is typically 200 to 400mg of Celebrex daily.
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Celebrex, said it had received complaints from patients who are taking the drug and has ordered that it be removed from the market. In a statement, Pfizer said, “We are committed to providing the highest quality, safe and effective pharmaceutical treatments for patients who suffer from chronic, debilitating conditions.”
Celebrex, which is also marketed under the brand name Celebrex, is used for arthritis and other forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis. It is also used in the treatment of pain, such as in the management of chronic pain.
“As a leader in the world of prescription drugs, Celebrex has been a beacon of hope for many patients who have suffered debilitating conditions,” said Dr. Weitz, a professor of pharmacology and medical sciences at Yale University.
“With its availability and FDA-approved indication, Celebrex has brought a new ray of hope to many patients,” said Dr. Weitz. “This move will not only help us make informed decisions about our prescription drugs but will also help to improve the quality of care we are giving our patients.”
Celebrex’s use in the United States has been linked to increased risk of serious, life-threatening allergic reactions that can cause skin to blistering, rashes, and skin to peeling. In some cases, people taking Celebrex have experienced serious allergic reactions to the drugs. This is because Celebrex, as a prescription drug, is available in a generic form.
The FDA has received complaints from patients taking Celebrex, but not from those who are not taking the drug. The complaints related to the safety of Celebrex and the lack of information on the risk of a serious allergic reaction.
“We have been concerned about the safety of Celebrex for some patients. This is a big problem for patients,” said Dr.
“The lack of information about the potential risk of a serious allergic reaction to Celebrex is a concern for both patients and physicians,” she added.
In addition to the drug, Celebrex has been linked to increased risk of kidney stones, a condition in which the kidneys become enlarged.
